Try This First
Most reports come down to one of these, and checking takes a minute:
- The app can't find the volca FM2. Confirm it is powered on and connected with a data USB cable rather than a charge-only one. Then open Settings, choose the correct MIDI output port, and press Connect. Some USB hubs are unreliable; try a direct port.
- Capture, restore, or “read current patch” is greyed out. Those need a two-way MIDI connection. Select a MIDI input port as well as an output in Settings, and check the connection-status indicator.
- Auditioning is silent. Check the playback target in Settings — Volca, App, or Both — and the in-app synth volume. If you expect sound from the hardware, confirm the instrument's own volume and that the MIDI channel matches.
- Patches didn't import. Make sure the files really are DX7-format SysEx (
.syxor.sys) or ZIP archives of them, and that they are in Downloads or a folder you selected. Files that aren't valid DX7 data are skipped. - A restore warned me before running. That is deliberate — restoring overwrites all of the instrument's programs and sequences. Capture a fresh snapshot first if you want a way back.
What to Include
If it is still broken, these five things turn a slow back-and-forth into one reply:
- Your device and OS version — for example “iPad Air, iPadOS 18” or “MacBook Pro, macOS 15”.
- The Rithmatic version, from the About row in Settings.
- Your volca FM2 firmware version, and the MIDI interface or cable you use.
- What you did, what you expected, and what happened instead.
- A screenshot or short screen recording, if the problem is visual. For an import problem, the patch file itself helps — if you have the right to share it.
Your Privacy When You Write
We only ever see what you choose to put in the message. The app has no analytics, no logs, no crash reports, and no usage data, ever; it works offline apart from the optional tip jar. We keep your email for as long as it takes to answer it. See the Privacy Policy for the full picture, and the Terms of Use for what the app does and does not promise.
